A short video on reverse electroplating gold plated scrap using a sulphuric electrolytic cell. As always wear proper saftey equipment when performing these experiments and never breathe in any fumes created from these processes.

what’s the anode and cathode made out of
@imatelly The cathode is made of lead. I’m not 100% sure about what the anode is made of. Looks like some grade of steel(not stainless). Most anything will work for the anode as long as it conducts electricity well. The cathode however has to be highly impervious to sulphuric acid which is why lead is used.
@metalicmario ty very much
Great VID, how much Voltage and Amperage you use ?
@Kalf9999
I use a standard 120V 2/10 amp battery charger. Its important that you use a manual charger as the automatic ones wont work. You can get one on the website at the end of the vid or pic one up most anywhere they battery chargers are sold. 2 amps deplates slower than 10 amps but 10 amps will heat up faster.
How do you get the gold back out of the solution.
@MrJohnnipper Basically you’ll filter the sulphuric acid leaving behind the gold (black powder). The H2SO4 concnetration has to be lowered with water before filtration. This is a dangerous process and has to be handled with caution as concentrated H2SO4 is a very nasty acid. Worse than HCL and HNO3 in my opinion. Go to the website mentioned on my vid to see how to recover the gold. There is another way to do it but you should try it this way first to understand the why not just the how.
were do u buy the sulfuric acid from what store
@ejmiss123
True Value. You can also fiind concentrated H2S04 at Ace Hardware. I’ve never seen H2S04 at Lowe’s or Home Depot.
How do You know other metals (those from under the gold) are not undergoing the process as well?
@Phacias
You can’t tell. In fact, you should assume that contaminant metals are coming off with the gold. This happens in very small amounts however. Each item depending on the type of underlying base metal, how long the material stays in the cell and temperature will determine how much contaminant comes off of the scrap. An electrolytic cell is for gold recovery and not refining. You must understand the difference between the two when getting into refining precious metals.
Cool Mario…
didn’t saw that one… nicely done !
@Phacias If the copper basket in the video was being attacked to any significant degree than the bubbles would probably be brownish.
I want to do make an electrolytic cell, and i want to know if the gold deposits on the bottom or on the anode or cathode, and which one is the anode and which is the cathode. And is the bath consisting solely of sulphuric acid or is there something else in it?? Pls help me out.
@KodaB1 Go to the website given at the end of the video. You can watch videos there and learn everything you need to know. You can also buy all the materials you will need.
@metalicmario tyvms, will do that.
How do I get the black paticals to come off of my SS once I have gone through the cycle?? It just sems to stick there.
Thanks Jerry
